No Chaser; Straight Ahead Abstract Painting

Post presents an exhibition that explores a cross section of artists working in a purely non-referential, non-objective sphere. These painters from Los Angeles and New York make paintings that refer first and foremost to the structure and process of creating a painted image –issues which become most visible and critical in the production of an abstract image. In an era in which concept, content and commentary dominate the art world these artists press ahead with their experiments in developing intuitive, idiosyncratic structure. The No Chaser title is derived from the Thelonius Monk composition title Straight, No Chaser and is meant to convey the absence of any attendant or addendant implications to the pure act of painting. Roberto Callasso says,” Meaning is the first enemy of aesthetic,” and for these painters the personal manipulation of the visual and tactile qualities of their materials inform the image and ideas that are the outcome and not the reverse.

The participating artists are: Hilary Baker, Tony Beauvy , Camille Cornelius, Alexander Couwenberg, Wess Dahlberg, Joan Kahn, Jeff Kowatch, Linda King, David Lloyd, Chris Pate, Gayle Ruskin-White, Tom Savage, Danny Shain, Mark Sheinkman, and Mark Zimmermann.
